Wireless stick-on switches: a switch where you want one, without a wall chase

What the wall was costing you
Adding a conventional switch to a decorated room is a building job, not an electrical one. Chase the wall, run conduit, pull the cable, make good the plaster, repaint. On a solid wall in a finished house that is a day's work, a room full of dust and a decorating bill larger than the switch. On a partition or near a structural element it may not be allowed at all, and in rented accommodation cutting a wall is not an option at any price.
A stick-on switch replaces all of that with peeling a liner and pressing it to the wall. Ten minutes, nothing to reinstate, nothing to repaint.
Where it can go that a wired switch cannot
A wired switch goes where the electrician could reach when the house was built. A wireless one goes where the hand actually reaches for it.

And it is reversible. If the position turns out to be wrong, take it off and move it. Getting a wired switch position wrong repeats the whole job; getting this one wrong costs a new adhesive pad. One switch to several lights, several switches to one light
The switch sends a command rather than carrying the load, so the relationship between switches and lights is a setting rather than a wiring diagram. One switch can drive every fitting in a room as a group. Three switches in three doorways can all drive the same light. Two-way and three-way arrangements that would each need their own cable run are three devices bound to the same target.
The light keeps its app, remote and voice control. What the switch adds is the thing those three are worst at: something on the wall that a guest, a child or anyone without the app can press without being told how.
A stick-on switch tells the controller to turn the light off; the fitting itself stays live. Before changing a lamp or touching any wiring, switch off at the existing wall switch or the breaker. The reverse also holds: a conventional wall switch cuts power to the controller and the app loses the light, which is the whole story in why the wall switch breaks smart control.
Two years on one battery
These switches are designed for a two-year battery life in normal domestic use, and the reason is structural: the switch is completely inert until it is pressed. No radio listening, no polling, no keep-alive. Pressing the button wakes the circuit, sends one short transmission and puts it back to sleep, a few milliseconds of activity per press and nothing in between.
That is why a battery switch outlasts a battery sensor by years. A PIR or radar module has to stay awake to notice things. A switch only has to notice a finger, and the finger provides the power to notice it with.
Mounting it so the link stays solid
The radio link is short-range and purpose-built, which is what makes it dependable in a house: it does not share a congested Wi-Fi channel, it does not route through a hub, and it does not depend on the internet, an account or a cloud service being up.
- Pick the surface from the table below. Non-metallic surfaces are all fine. Metal on the surface or directly behind it detunes the antenna.
- Hold it in place and press it before the liner comes off. Count walls rather than metres: a straight run across one room is nothing, three brick walls and a stairwell is a different question. If the light answers from the intended spot, the spot is good.
- Give it a hand's width from large metal objects in the wall or on it: a consumer unit, a steel stud, a wall-mounted television bracket, a radiator.
- Clean the surface, then press for thirty seconds. Adhesive failures on switches are nearly always dust or a cold surface, not the pad.
- Bind it to the light in the app, then press it once more from the doorway or the bed, wherever it will actually be used.
